The Hairdresser's Blog: My Best Friend's Wedding
If you ask me what it was like coming to Washington, D.C. as a young French hairdresser, so many memories come to mind. One was the loneliness of being so far from home and family. Another was the fear of speaking my broken English to American clients. That's why I remember Jjana Valentiner so clearly. Not only was Jjana this beautiful and talented actor, she was such an warm and genuine soul. From the first haircut, we were fast friends. She introduced me to her best friend Ian, another D.C. actor and a super handsome guy who looked like he belonged in Hollywood. The three of us became inseparable. We saw theater together, went to concerts and spent late nights imagining our futures. That is, until Cliff came along.
Well, as they say, all good things... Ian and I grudgingly accepted Cliff. After a while, we even got to like him. So when Jjana told us that she was going to marry this giant bear of a guy, we were actually happy for her. Then she blew us away. She asked us to be her brides-men. I still get choked up thinking about it.
The day of Jjana's wedding, I felt so lucky. While Ian was off with some other friends, and Cliff wasn't allowed anywhere near his bride-to-be, I got Jjana all to myself for one last time. She showed me the special dress she would wear, and we talked about how to make her hair fit perfectly with the day, with her beautiful face, and with her genuine spirit that you feel just being near her. Years later, I look at these pictures and I see a true-to-life angel, the same Jjana that I know today.
